Dealing with .CBR/.CBZ comic format files

If you search the internet for old comic books, you would probably end up getting files in the .CBR or .CBZ extension. There are a lot of comic reader applications which can interpret this format files. However to use them with PC/Tablet/Phones you better convert them into something more handy such as PDF.

.CBR or .CBZ is nothing but a compressed RAR archive files. You have many options to convert this format files into PDF. A CBR file will consists many images in sequence (each image equal to a page of book)

I have seen an online .CBR to PDF conversion tool here, but you will have to upload the file in their website and give your e-mail ID as well.

If you want to handle this on your own you can follow these steps:

  1. Change the .CBR/.CBZ file extension into .RAR (.RAR is an archive file format similar to .ZIP)
  2. Download a free archive tool such as WinRar
  3. Use the WinRar to extract contents of .RAR you have renamed on step 1 and extract them into a folder
  4. Use a batch .PDF conversion and merge tools such as Adobe Acrobat to combine and save as PDF
  5. The advantage of using professional tools such as Acrobat is that you can optimize the PDF by balancing the file size to quality for your target device
