How to troubleshoot WordPress Post Pagination (nextpage) Issues

Across the Internet, WordPress ‘Pagination’ term used in so many confusing ways. In this post, I am referring WordPress Pagination as ‘Dividing one big WordPress post into multiple/smaller pages’.

This post is not for guiding how to achieve pagination in WordPress. There are tons of references for that on the web. This post is only to assist you with the troubleshooting steps if pagination does not work on your WordPress post.

I assume you have attempted to use the <!–nextpage–> quick tag to break your post into multiple pages and it is not working.

So here are some quick checkpoints for troubleshooting this issue.

Checkpoint 1 – Ensure your inserting the <!–nextpage–> tag from the text or HTML editing interface of WordPress and not from the visual interface

Wordpress Post Pagination/NextPage Does not Work

Checkpoint 2 – Try typing the <!–nextpage–> tag manually on the WordPress editor instead of copying it from web pages or anywhere else. I have noticed that copying this tag from web pages sometimes pasts some close matching symbols to ‘ - ‘ symbol (e.g. as ?????). Refer closely the picture below to see the difference between copied tag versus manually typed tag on the editor itself (this small thing driven me crazy for many hours while troubleshooting this issue)

    Big thanks!

This has burst my brain for quite some time and simply ‘typing’ it manually has rectified the issue!

Thanks for the info and we all learn at every stage of our short time!
